An extensive extended cruise through Australia is being halted in the wake of the death of an elderly lady who was left behind by the ship on a distant coastal location.

The passenger had been trekking on the tropical location with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the group for a break. The ship sailed away leaving her and came back several hours later after the crew realised the woman was missing.

A major rescue mission found her body the following day.

Officials are investigating the tragedy, together with law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Head of the cruise operator stated that travelers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the rest of the cruise had been terminated due to the "sad loss and earlier mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he added that guests would be provided a full refund, and said the organization was working "to arrange the return journeys of the individuals via private aircraft".

Authorities also published an updated statement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from getting on the liner.

The official said that they would visit the liner in Cairns upon its coming back.

Timeline of Events

The ship first departed the coastal city on 24 October, and was only 48 hours into the journey at the moment of the elderly woman's demise. The remote island was the first stop on the itinerary.

Passengers on board - who usually pay large sums of currency to participate in the voyage - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of hiking or snorkeling.

Relatives Reaction

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her family was "stunned and saddened that the vessel left the island after an organised outing without my mum".

Through her comments, she characterized her mother as an "active octogenarian" who was a affiliate of a bushwalking group.

"Based on limited details we have been provided, it appears that there was a failure of attention and basic judgment," she mentioned.

She continued that she desired the inquiry would be able to identify what "the company should have done that might have preserved Mother's life".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a very hot period, and she took sick on the uphill trek," she stated.

"She was asked her to go back, alone. Then the vessel departed, seemingly without conducting a headcount.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or shortly after, she passed away, by herself."

Operator Reaction

In a statement, the Chief Executive verified that the company was "cooperating fully with investigators to support their examination".

The liner accommodates up to 120 travelers with 46 personnel, according to corporate data. It was purpose-built to reach remote locations of Australia's coastline and is fitted with "tenders" - small boats used to ferry individuals on land visits.

Incidents of this nature are infrequent, and passenger vessels have systems to record which travelers are boarding or getting off, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] aboard really isn't an option," an authority remarked.

Cruise lines regard these methods very seriously and have "clever tech in place to stop such occurrences from taking place," the specialist further stated.
