The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
