The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.

What next for both teams?

Everton: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
